NetApp
NetApp is a rare breed among the Tier-1 storage vendors in that they produce storage solutions and storage solutions alone. They are a multi-billion dollar company who are totally focused on storage and don’t dilute their energies by manufacturing servers, printers, tape drives and other peripherals.
Unlike their main competition, NetApp rarely talk about speeds and performance as their systems are designed to deliver these fundamentals. What differentiates NetApp is the software that they develop to run on their hardware. A few of the key points are as follows:
- NetApp software saves you money by minimising the number of disks you need to buy because of the efficiencies of their RAID-DP protection and the elimination of duplicated data through the unique deduplication facility built into every system.
- The NetApp application aware snapshotting e.g. Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, SAP, VMware enables rapid recovery of files and large volumes of key business critical data without impacting system performance or consuming copious amounts of disk space
- Enabling Disaster Recovery by data replication to a remote site does not need expensive networking hardware nor does it need the same class of system at the DR location
NetApp are so confident in the data reduction capabilities of their software that they will guarantee that you use 50% less disk capacity than any other manufacturer when deployed in a virtualised environment. They even promise to give you any extra disk free of charge if this proves not to be the case. This makes NetApp the storage platform of choice for any VMware, Citrix Xenserver or Hyper-V deployment.
There are many storage solutions in the market that address one requirement well but when another requirement comes along, they are incapable of addressing your needs or require expensive gateway products that add to the costs and also make management much more complex.
NetApp offer a single platform that will address not only NAS and SAN needs, but also support CIFS and NFS in one integrated system. Deploying CIFS eliminates the need for a Windows Fileserver and its associated hardware and licence costs. If you have the need for ISCSI or Fibre Channel connection requirements then all NetApp systems will handle both concurrently. Fibre Channel over Ethernet and 10Gb Ethernet are also available.
To enable you to take advantage of the NetApp storage efficiencies you can integrate a NetApp controller with many existing HP, EMC, IBM, HDS and other storage systems. This enables you to deploy NetApp snapshotting and deduplication on hardware that is currently incapable of performing these tasks.

NetApp Solutions
- Data Protection, Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery - Server applications continue to grow, becoming evermore critical to your business operations. NetApp storage solutions provide affordable protection, availability and management of business critical data. How NetApp solutions can help with your DR Planning and Data Availability.
- Server Virtualisation - A server-to-storage virtualised infrastructure is an efficient and cost-effective way to manage your data center. NetApp virtualised storage solutions, used in conjunction with VMware, simplify data protection and expand the benefits of your virtualised applications—from improved flexibility and reduced provisioning times, to increased resource utilisation and performance. The NetApp unified storage architecture provides storage virtualisation for FC, iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS protocols, delivering the lowest TCO in the industry.
- Messaging & Collaboration - Rapid data growth is raising the complexity of storing, managing and sharing data especially in Mail systems which facilitate vital communications both internally and externally. NetApp provides scalable, highly effective messaging and collaboration solutions that will help to optimise storage utilisation, improve data availability, define and deliver against your data management policies, and successfully meet messaging and collaboration requirements.
