The Challenge
 
A customer in the Housing sector approached EACS with a concern regarding current data management practices.  With an audit pending, the business had limited control or knowledge of what type of data was being stored on their network, by whom and where. 

The business required answers to the following questions:
• Where is our data being held?
• Who holds the biggest amount of data within the business?
• Which file formats are prevalent throughout the business?
• What is the rate of data change within the business file stores?
• Where is our sensitive data located?
• How much data is duplicated throughout the business file stores?
• How is information used within the business?
 

The Solution
 
Using a simple audit tool, EACS gathered information on the type, location, owner & size of files throughout the business stores and where possible local hard disk drives.  The results were presented in a graphical format providing the ICT team and business leaders with the information to make reasoned and informed decisions on future strategy.  As part of the project, EACS also interviewed a number of selected end users to understand how data was collected, distributed and used. 
 
The project and resulting document resulted in a number of strategic decisions either made or currently under discussion including File Archiving from C2C and a fully featured Websense solution dynamically protecting sensitive data within the business.
