At eacs we have always been geared up for remote working. As proponents of the benefits that the underlying technology offers, we would be hypocrites if we didn’t exercise them ourselves. When Boris announced the lockdown back in March, it was pretty much business as usual for the majority of the company.
We would be lying if we said there was no scrambling around mobilising the service desk, but that it mostly down to ensuring our virtual security controls are as effective as the physical controls that we have in-place at the service desk locations (namely Huntingdon and London).
The reason for this is simple – at no point in time did we think that the country would go into lockdown because of an invisible enemy; a virus. Unseen, and impossible to predict. We are living through a once-in-a-generation event. Similar to the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918, this virus will put a blemish on the timeline of the history of humans for generations to come, and all future epidemiology models will be largely driven by the way the world reacted to the impact of COVID-19.
There you go, I said that dreaded word.
OK, so now that’s out of the way. As techies, we have been helping companies who aren’t as able to mobilise us others. For some, we have run analysis on backend infrastructure to ensure that it can cope with additional loads. For others, we have spun up entirely new environments to tide them over (in fact, we developed a great product for that – see here).
We partner with some of the largest enablers of remote working, namely Microsoft and Citrix, but many others. There are many factors to consider when mobilising your workforce, key of which is security. There is a fine balance between having a secure system versus a system that is too secure that stifles the less IT literate users in the workforce from even using in the first place. We would know; we saw a massive spike in the incoming tickets from users who needed some help. Luckily, we had anticipated it and ensured the necessary people were on hand to help.
We see a different world post-COVID. It will be a world where businesses MUST have the ability to enable their staff to continue working should the unthinkable happen again.
